Extensively illustrated with photos, wood cuts and original dust jacket designs. Chaldon Herring explores the literary colony that grew up between the wars around the reclusive author T F Powys, and the works inspired by the coast and landscape of this remote Dorset village. Other writers include Sylvia Townsend Warner, Llewelyn Powys, David Garnet and members of the Powys circle.

One hundred years ago the writer Theodore Powys moved to the remote Dorset village of Chaldon Herring. Here he wrote the books which made him - and the village - famous. Sylvia Townsend Warner, his brother Llewelyn and his sisters Katie and Gertrude joined Powys there, and during the 1920's and 30's the place became a literary colony of some distinction. Visitors included T E Lawrence, David Garnett, Ottoline Morrell and other Bloomsburyites, Marianne Moore and Augustus John. The two decades between the wars was a time of intense creativity producing a great number of letters, diaries, short stories and novels that celebrate the place and its people.

Drawing on this fascinating literary legacy Judith Stinton re-examines the relationships and creative tensions inspired by the coast and landscape of this most isolated Dorset village. First published in 1988 and long out of print Chaldon Herring has been extensively revised in this new edition, beautifully illustrated with 80 photographs, woodcuts and original dust jackets, many of which have not been seen before.

Judith Stinton is a children's author, free-lance editor, book seller and exhibition curator. She was heavily involved in setting up the award-winning Dorset Writers' Gallery in the County Museum before completing a 5 year project to catalogue the museum's world famous Thomas Hardy Collection. Her most recent book A Dorset Utopia: The Little Commonwealth and Homer Lane will be published later this year.
